Dear Colleagues

Thank you for your letter of 26 January 2007 which was signed by 14 prominent journalists.

In my capacity as the President of World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) and as the Chairman of the Turkish Press Council, I would like to express our heartfelt sorrow for the tragic loss of Mr.Hrant Dink, a prominent Turkish-Armenian journalist in Istanbul.

He was a distinguished columnist. His heart was open to loving all humankind. He was a man of quality. He was always ready to engage in dialogue. He stood out for his open-mindedness and courage.

We all share your feeling in regard to the late Hrant Dink.

Let us hope that the hatred we have witnessed will be swept out by wisdom, in line with Hrant Dink’s will.

AN APPEAL FOR PROTECTING FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND EXPRESSION IN TURKEY

Me, the undersigned Head of the Lebanese Editors Syndicate and Editor-in-Chief of Al Bayrak Newspaper, condemn the murder of prominent Armenian journalist in Turkey, Hrant Dink, and express my solidarity with the Armenian National Committee – Lebanon (HAY TAD). I believe this brutal act constitutes a blow to the Values of democracy and human rights and call for the protection of freedom of Thought and expression.
